Mumina Sheikh Omar: A Lifelong Advocate for Justice Takes Her Place at the NIHRC

With an exceptional career spanning nearly four decades, Mumina Sheikh Omar emerges as one of the country’s most seasoned champions of justice. Her appointment as a Commissioner marks a significant milestone in Somalia’s efforts to strengthen human rights institutions.

Between 2022 and 2024, she served as State Minister in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. From 2017 to 2022, she held a pivotal role as Deputy Chair of the Independent Constitutional Review and Implementation Commission (ICRIC). She also served as a Member of the Federal Parliament from 2012 to 2016 and Deputy Minister for Women and Human Rights.

 

Between 2011 and 2012, she served as a lawyer and defender of IDPs through the Somali Women Lawyers Association. Her earlier roles include serving as a judge at Madina District Court and working with UNISOM and UNITAF in civilian resource operations.

Mumina brings a powerful vision for a just and accountable Somalia, with a unique blend of experience spanning the judiciary, legislature, and executive leadership.
