On Monday, 14 September 2026, the Chairperson of the National Independent Human Rights Commission (NIHRC), Dr. Maryan Qasim, received Mr. Raisedon Zenenga, Head of the UN Transition Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS), and the delegation he led, at the Commission’s main office in Mogadishu.
The meeting focused on the transition of United Nations human rights functions and the Commission’s growing role in monitoring, reporting, and addressing human rights issues.
Mr. Zenenga said the United Nations would continue supporting the Commission after UNTMIS concludes its mandate in October, particularly in institutional capacity building, monitoring, and reporting, and strengthening the Commission’s ability to carry out its constitutional mandate independently.
Dr. Maryan Qasim welcomed the continuation of cooperation between the two sides, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to strengthening national ownership and building an effective, independent national human rights institution that is easily accessible to the public.
