On Monday, 24 August 2026, Commissioner Farhan Mohamed Jimale of the National Independent Human Rights Commission (NIHRC), speaking at an event marking the conclusion of the UN Transition Mission in Somalia’s (UNTMIS) work on justice and corrections, said that Somalia is moving into a new phase that requires national leadership, independent oversight and sustained institutional cooperation.
Commissioner Farhan said the conclusion of UNTMIS’s mandate should not be seen merely as an ending, but as a transition handing over responsibility and leadership to Somalia’s national institutions.
The event marked the conclusion of thirteen years of UNSOM/UNTMIS support to the rule of law in Somalia. Commissioner Farhan Jimale stressed that justice and dignity must be grounded in respect for human rights, and that a person deprived of their liberty should never lose their dignity or basic rights.
He also commended the role played by the United Nations and domestic and international partners over the years in the development of Somalia’s justice sector.
