On Wednesday, 26 August 2026, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, received the Chairperson of the National Independent Human Rights Commission (NIHRC), Dr. Maryan Qasim Ahmed, at his office in Mogadishu.
The Chairperson briefed the President on the progress of the Commission’s establishment and operationalisation, its work over the past six months, and the ongoing efforts to build an independent, effective and trustworthy national institution.
The meeting also touched on the challenges facing the Commission, ways to strengthen cooperation with government institutions, and how the Commission can secure the support it needs to independently and effectively carry out its constitutional mandate.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Chairperson Dr. Maryan Qasim both underscored the importance of protecting and promoting human rights, strengthening accountability and the rule of law, and building lasting national institutions that safeguard the rights and dignity of the Somali people.
