On Sunday, 30 August 2026, the National Independent Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) held a meeting at its headquarters focused on accelerating priority tasks and strengthening the fulfilment of its duties in protecting and promoting human rights.
The meeting, chaired by the Chairperson, Dr. Maryan Qasim Ahmed, brought together Commission members to discuss the general human rights situation in the country and how to strengthen the Commission’s role in monitoring, protecting and promoting human rights, with particular priority given to access to justice, protection of vulnerable people, and the tracking of complaints and incidents.
The Chairperson stressed the importance of the Commission carrying out its duties jointly, independently and efficiently. “We are committed to building a Commission that the Somali people can trust, a voice for everyone, and one that independently monitors the human rights situation. We carry a great responsibility, and it is important that our work and our plans reflect the real needs of Somali society and the Commission’s legal mandate,” she said.
The meeting placed particular focus on the work carried out so far by the Commission, its upcoming work plans for the near term, the acceleration of priority tasks, the completion of internal procedures and regulations, and the strengthening of cooperation with other government institutions, civil society and international organisations.
The members concluded by agreeing on the importance of continuously monitoring the human rights situation in the country and responding to emerging issues, while safeguarding the Commission’s independence, impartiality and credibility.
